Prophet Muhammad's Most Important Prayers

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) frequently turned to Allah in every aspect of life and taught many valuable prayers (du'as) to his followers. Here are some of the most important prayers from the words of the Prophet:

1. Daily Prayers

Morning and Evening Prayer:

"Allahumma inni as’aluka al-‘afwa wa’l-‘afiyata fi’d-dunya wa’l-akhirati. Allahumma inni as’aluka al-‘afwa wa’l-‘afiyata fi dini wa dunyayya wa ahli wa mali."

(O Allah! I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth.) (Tirmidhi, Supplications, 3402)

Prayer Before Sleeping:

"Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya."

(O Allah! In Your name, I die and I live.) (Bukhari, Supplications, 6324)

Prayer Upon Waking Up:

"Alhamdu lillahilladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhi’n-nushur."

(Praise be to Allah who has given us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.) (Bukhari, Supplications, 6312)

2. Prayers for Healing and Well-being

Prayer for the Sick:

"Adhhibi’l-ba’s, rabba’n-nas, ishfi wa anta’sh-shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uka, shifa’an la yughadiru saqama."

(O Lord of mankind! Remove the hardship and grant healing, for You are the Healer. There is no cure but Yours, a healing that leaves no ailment behind.) (Bukhari, Medicine, 5743)

3. Prayers for Hardship and Anxiety

Prayer for Worry and Grief:

"Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika mina’l-hammi wa’l-hazan, wa a‘udhu bika mina’l-‘ajzi wa’l-kasal, wa a‘udhu bika mina’l-jubni wa’l-bukhl, wa a‘udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayn wa qahri’r-rijal."

(O Allah! I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, and from being overwhelmed by debt and oppression of men.) (Bukhari, Supplications, 6369)

Prayer When Facing Calamity:

"Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘un. Allahumma’jurni fi musibati wa khluf li khayran minha."

(Surely, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah! Reward me in my affliction and replace it with something better.) (Muslim, Funerals, 918)

Prayer for Seeking Forgiveness (Istighfar):

"Allahumma anta rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa‘dika ma istata‘tu. A‘udhu bika min sharri ma sana‘tu, abuu laka bini‘matika ‘alayya wa abuu bidhanbi, faghfir li fa innahu la yaghfiru’dh-dhunuba illa anta."

(O Allah! You are my Lord. There is no deity except You. You created me, and I am Your servant. I uphold Your covenant and promise to the best of my ability. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me and confess my sins. So forgive me, for surely no one forgives sins except You.) Prayer for Protection from Evil and Harm:

"A‘udhu bi kalimatillahi’t-tammati min sharri ma khalaq."

(I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.) (Muslim, Remembrance, 2708)

Prayer Before Leaving the House:

"Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘ala Allah, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah."

(In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no power nor strength except with Allah.) (Abu Dawood, Clothing, 5095)
